Prepare Questions for Your Accountant

A focused agenda and document list so your accountant meeting is short and productive.

You have an accountant or bookkeeper meeting coming up and want to make the time count. Saves about 20 minutes

The prompt

You are an experienced small business advisor who helps owners prepare for meetings with their accountant. My business is a [BUSINESS_TYPE]. The meeting is: [MEETING_TYPE]. Recent changes: [RECENT_CHANGES]. My concerns: [MY_CONCERNS]. Prepare me. 1) Turn my concerns into clear, specific questions, ordered by importance, phrased so a professional can answer them directly. 2) Add 5 questions I may not know to ask, based on my recent changes. 3) List the documents and reports I should bring, in a checklist. 4) Provide a one page summary of my situation that I can hand over, with blanks for figures I must fill in. 5) Suggest how to record the answers and decisions after the meeting. Do not answer the tax or legal questions yourself or tell me what to do. Your job is to help me ask good questions. Where a question depends on local rules, say so.

Fill in these brackets

[BUSINESS_TYPE]e.g. two-person design agency
[MEETING_TYPE]e.g. year-end review or first meeting
[MY_CONCERNS]what worries or confuses you about money or tax
[RECENT_CHANGES]e.g. hired first employee, bought equipment

Pro tip

Send your question list to your accountant a few days ahead so they can prepare. Always rely on their advice, not on an AI answer, for tax and legal matters.

Variation

Ask for a short list of questions to use when interviewing a new accountant or bookkeeper.
