Write a Job Ad That Attracts

A clear, honest job ad written for the people you actually want to hire.

The prompt

You are an experienced recruiter who writes for small businesses. Write a job ad for a [JOB_TITLE] at a [BUSINESS_TYPE] in [LOCATION]. Main duties: [KEY_DUTIES] Must-haves: [MUST_HAVES] Pay and hours: [PAY_AND_HOURS] Constraints: Use plain, warm language at a 7th grade reading level. Be honest about the hard parts of the job. Do not use phrases like "rockstar", "fast-paced environment" or "work hard play hard". Do not list more than 5 requirements. Make it clear who should not apply, in a kind way. Include the pay and hours near the top. Output format: 1) A headline under 10 words. 2) A 3 sentence intro about the business and why this role matters. 3) What you will do (bullets). 4) What we are looking for (bullets). 5) What we offer. 6) How to apply, including one small screening question applicants must answer in their reply.

Pro tip

Always put the pay in the ad. Ads with clear pay tend to attract applicants who are already comfortable with the number. Check your local employment rules before you publish or act on this.

Variation

Ask for a short version under 80 words for social media and a text-message-friendly version for local community groups.
